PYRGOS VILLAGE
The Village of Pirgos is a typical example of a fortified Cycladic
Village. The village has some fine old houses, the remains of a Venetian
castle on the hilltop and several Byzantine churches. The streets follow
the contours of the hill and encircle the village like belts. Pirgos
is one of the largest villages in Santorini, built on a hill it offers
an open view towards all points of the Island.
Pyrgos
was (and still is, of course), a cross-roads for walkers: the road to
the Monastery of the Prophitis Ilias passes through Pyrgos, and the
paths to Exo Gonia (from the school or from the little church of Aghios
Christoforos on the ring road), Profitis Ilias and Emborio (on the left
and on the right of the church of the Apostles, respectively) all start
from here. Pyrgos is a lively place, winter and summer alike.
Pyrgos is a place you should certainly visit, and do allow yourself
enough time, if only to see its churches, we counted thirty-three of
them! Many belong to a parish, but a fair number are private and are
only open on the feast day of their patron saint. The prettiest, and
one of the oldest on the island, is the Theotokaki (Dormition of the
Virgin), inside the castle walls.
AKROTIRI
Akrotiri
was one of the fortified castles of the island during the medieval years.
After Santorini was occupied by the Turks, the strong Venetian castle
was torn down. The remains of its towers are easily discernible. The
old churches of Aghia Triada and Ypapanti tou Soteros are found in the
area.
Visit Akrotiri, the site of an Ancient Minoan City, with its wonderful
preserved houses and wall paintings.
In Akrotiri you can have your lunch in splendid tavernas built into
the rock. A small traditional boat will take you to Kokkini Akti, (Red
Beach) and Aspti Akti (White Beach) as well as to the old Volcano.
ANCIENT THIRA
Ancient
Thira, was found at Mesa Vouno, approximately 15km southeast Fira Town.
Its settlements date from the ninth century BC and among the buldings
that have come to light are the Agora, several temples to Dionysus and
Apollo , a Theatre, a Cave where Hermes and Hercules were once worshipped,
the Gymnasium and the Roman baths. Vessels, coins and pottery found
in Ancient Thira are on display in the Archaeological Museum in Fira.
KARTERADOS
A village only two kilometers east of Fira, with an interesting architecture
and three lovely churches worth visiting. Analipsis, in the center of
the village, has the Italian ecclesiastical architecture style but as
it transformed in the Cyclades islands and it resembles to the Cathedral
of Fira. The other two, Eisodia tis Theotokou and Aghios Nikolaos are
typically Santorinian. Karterados has a quiet black-sand beach that
is the closest from Fira

The
older part of Karterados village is all but invisible from the main
street. The rock houses have been dug out of the bed of a torrent, and
their roofs are on a level with the pavement. By the 19th century it
had become a place of wealthy ship-owners., and according to one story
took its name from the fact that they watched and waited for the return
of the sailors who sailed to Russia, Malta and Egypt.
Once past the village the road leads to the quiet pebble beach of Exo
Gialos, and from there to Monolithos.
