PAROS ISLAND GENERAL INFORMATION

In the heart of the Cyclades Islands, Paros, with 10,000 inhabitants and 120km coastline, is a whole world fulfilling everybody's dream of an Aegean Island. Paros loctaed in the heart of the Cyclades between Naxos, Mykonos,
Ios, Sifnos and Syros, at 90 nautical miles from the port of Piraeus. Paros is the third largest island of the Cyclades, after Naxos and Andros, with a surface area of 186 square km.

The most famous Paros local product of the island is of course the white semi transparent marble which was used in for most of the masterpieces of the Ancient Time (Venus de Milo).

The food on the island of Paros is very similar to the other islands of the Cyclades with small variations and some local specialities.

Do not forget to taste Paros local wine !

Travel to Paros

A large number of passenger boats and car ferries arrive in Paros every day. Some of them continue on to other islands in the area such as Naxos, Ios, Santorini and Mykonos. The time it takes to get to Paros island from Piraeus depends on the speed of the boat you take.
The ordinary ferries take 5 hours to get to Paros. The Highspeed 3 hours.
Naxos island is only an hour ride on the ferry, Santorini 2,5 hours.

MUSEUMS AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES IN PAROS

1. The Archaeological Museum of Paros
The Archaeological Museum of Paros is situated in Parikia, the island’s capital, next to the High School.
It is one of the most interesting Paros museums, containing finds from the Neolithic and Bronze era,
the classical and Hellenistic period. The Museum’s most important items are: the Marble Statue of Gorgo
which was the Acrotirion of a temple, two marbles relief plaques from the church of Ekantotapiliani,
the marble statue of Artemis of 2.74m high which was the cult statue of a sanctuary…

2. The Byzantine Museum of Parikia
The Byzantine Museum of Parikia in situated in the Church of Ekantotapiliani. The museum exhisibits rare icons,
church relics and other ecclesiastical objects from the post-Byzantine period.

3. The Byzantine Museum of Naoussa
The Museums is located in the Church of St. Nikolas. It exhibits Byzantine and post Byzantine art: Byzantine icons, vessels and engravings but also Romans and Frankish sculptures.


4. The Folklore Art Museum and the Museum of Aegean Folk Culture of Lefkes
The small village of Lefkes houses two museums. The first one is a museum exhibiting the traditional way of living and houses textiles, embroideries, every day objects, tools… The first to collect all these objects was Nikos Panteleos, followed by many other donations and all of them were finally concentrated in the first folk museum of the island.
The second museum is housed by the Lefkes village hotel and it is privately run. It exhsibits many objects from all over the Cyclades.

Bus Services

The central buses stations are situated in the main towns, Parikia and Naoussa and schedules cal only be found there.

Buses from Parikia to:
Marathi - Kosto - Lefkes - Prodromo - Marmara - Marpissa - Piso Livadi - Logaras - Pounta Beach - Chrissi Akti - Dryos - Aspro Horio – Kamares - Naoussa - Aliki - Ageria – Voutakos - Petaloudes - Agios Arsenios - Pounta - Abelas - Santa Maria - Aliki - Dryos - Lefkes - Parikia.

Buses from Naoussa to:
Aliki - Isterini - Prodromos - Marmara - Marpissa - Piso Livadi - Logaras - Pounta Beach - Chrissi Akti - Dryos - Aspro Chorio - Abelas - Santa Maria - Kolimbithres

Taxi Service : There is a fleet of taxis centred in Paros town windmill next to the port.
The rates are standards for each destination and there are given on board.
There is also a radio taxi service (tel: 22840 21500)

Renting a motorbike, bicycle or car is highly recommended.

Water Sports : A wide variety of sports and leisure activities are on offer on Paros Island.
