Apeiranthos Village, Naxos island, Greece / click to visit our Naxos Photo Gallery

"APEIRANTHOS"

Discover the traditional beauty of the marble village, with its alleys made from marble at the foot of mountain Phanari. Apirathos is a very old place and had already existed, before it was populated by Cretan refugees after the battle of Crete (1850/1851). Unfortunately there isn't any real information about the village's older past and the inhabitants.
Apirathos' style is a mixture of reminders from the Venezian time (towers and archways) and Cretan influence.

One must visit the three most important museums:

Archaeological Museum:
It houses prehistoric finds (3000 - 1200 B. C.) from different places of the island, sky maps, Cycladic idols, Ancient Greek writings, etc.
Museum of Popular Art:
It shows household materials of daily usage and woven textiles made by Apirathos' women.
Geological Museum:
Local minerals and fossils of Naxos, like emery.

"APOLLONAS" - The Village of Apollonas and the Big Kouros

Apollonas was a fishing village. Located in the very northern part of Naxos it lives on tourism now. It promises a nice lunch and a view at the nice little bay. The Kouros of Apollonas, Naxos island Greece / click to enlarge

The biggest Kouros of Naxos (10,5m) can easily be found on top of the village. Kouros (=handsome young man) statues are made of marble, they represent gods and they are over 2500 years old. Archaeologists suppose that this Kouros is god Dionysos because of the beard and the fact that Naxos is the island of Dionysos.

The village of Filoti - Naxos island Greece

"FILOTI VILLAGE"

Filoti is the second biggest place on Naxos and located at the slope of Mount Zas. The Platia is excellent for a rest under the platan trees with its kafenions and taverns.

"KORONOS"

Koronos, with its valley of vineyards, is a little village at the edge of Koronos Mountain. Long ago, during the Industrial Revolution in Greece, Koronos was very important. The emery mined in Koronos was carried down to Moutsouna (the old export harbor) by cable car. Nowadays, it is just a monument.
