The island
of Aegina, in the middle of the Saronic Gulf, has been at the crossroads
of cultures and rival actions for many thousands of years. Aegina island
situated in the Saronic Gulf, 17 nautical miles south west of Pireaus
(Athens port). Aegina island is easily accessible by either ferry boats
or hydrofoils which carry out frequent journeys back and forth, all year
round. Despite its small area (83 square kilometres), it offers great
variety and has no reason to feel jealous of other "cosmopolitan"islands.
How
to get there
From Athens
From Piraeus (Athens Port) there are several ferries that go to Aegina
and also the Flying Dolphin hydrofoils as well as the Fast Catamaran service.
All of these go to Aegina Town, but there is a boat named Elvira
that leaves from the same area at Piraeus Port, and goes direct to Aghia
Marina.

Connections
with Other Islands
Poros Island
Aegina is connected with Poros island by ferry and hydrofoil.
The journey with the ordinary ferry is one hour and by hydrofoil 1/2 hour.
Daily trips to Poros are also oganized from Aegina
Hydra Island
Aegina is connected with Hydra island by ferry and hydrofoil.
The journey with the ordinary ferry is 2 hours and by hydrofoil 1 hour.
Daily trips to Hydra are also oganized from Aegina
Spetses Island
Aegina is connected with Spetses island by ferry and hydrofoil.
The journey with the ordinary ferry is 3,5 hours (with stop to Poros &
Hydra) and by hydrofoil 1,5 hour.
Angistri Island
Aegina is connected with Angistri island, a small island located very
close to Aegina.
Small boats will take you to Angistri several times a day.

Island Sightseeing
Aghios Nektarios Monastery
The Monastery (a convent) is named after its founder who died in 1920
and was canonised in 1961.
His relics are preserved in the first chapel. Located at 15-minute busride
from Aghia Marina: open daily.
No shorts and ladies modestly attired.
Afaia Temple
The temple of Afaia is one of the most beautifull classical temples in
Greece and also the oldest surviving,
stands on the top of a pine-clad hill above Aghia Marina.
The first temple on the site (700 BCE) was dedicated to Afaia, a deity
from Crete.
Palaiochora
The ruins of this medieval city cover the hill behind the Monastery of
Aghios Nektarios.
This is where the islanders used to take refuge from pirates and invasions.
Once a small city of 300 churches, some 32 frescoed churches (13th to
17th century) are still preserved.
Archaelogical site of Kolona with Museum
The hill of Kolona, a 10 minute walk north of Aegina town, was inhabited
from prehistoric times through the
classical period. Extensive walls and foundations have been discovered
and excavations are still in process.
Tower of Markellos
The pink Tower in Aegina Town, , built in 1802 and located approximately
50 yards from the church of Aghios Nikolas,
is the Tower of Markellos. The Tower housed in 1826 Capodistrias' government
until the Governor's Residence,
known as the "Palace of Barbayannis" was built.

The most popular Banks have branches on Aegina Island.
The following banks have a branch office in Aegina, they are all to be
found along the waterfront.

Services :
There are frequent bus services to every corner on the island.
There are three main routes:
1- Aegina town - Marathona - Perdika
2- Aegina town - Aghios Nectarios - Aghia Marina
3- Aegina town - Kipseli - Vathi - Souvalla - Agii - Vagia
